The James Webb Space Telescope is a time machine that can see back nearly to the point of creation itself, 13.5 billion years ago. The design boasts this fact in a text burst and includes a timeline starting at the upper left with the Big Bang, red-shifting its way through the dark age and across the print (above). The stars and galaxies begin to more fully populate the page until you see the universe as it is today at the lower right. The limit of JWST’s limit is tagged in yellow just after “First Stars”. Voyager 2 holds the record for most celestial bodies observed in a single mission having flown by four planetary systems. Then of course Voyager 1 also became the first man-made interstellar object with Voyager 2 expected to do the same in 2016. Some of the greatest advancements in space exploration have occurred in Pasadena like Explorer 1, the first successfully launched U.S. space probe and science mission. The city’s renowned aerospace institutions have also pioneered missions such as Cassini, Voyager, and the Mars Curiosity Rover. Mars Science features newest generation of robotic Martian surface rovers. Curiosity arrived in 2012 with Perseverance following in 2021 (and Ingenuity too!). Their search for past and present life on the Martian surface make them more like mobile laboratories than mere robot explorers. Juno is the first mission to go into a polar orbit around Jupiter. It was a 58 cm (23 in) diameter polished metal sphere, with four external radio antennas to broadcast radio pulses. Launched by the Soviet Union in 1957. See also the Tee! In only three and a half months, Pioneer became the very first mission to enter the Asteroid Belt to explore the outer solar system. The ultimate trivia challenge for Sci-Fi buffs: 61 different robots, 58 different aliens and 30 different icons of various vehicles referencing generations of film, television, children’s books, video games, toys, literature, cartoons and so on. International Space Station is a microgravity and space environment research laboratory which supports experiments in biology, human biology, physics, astronomy, meteorology, and other scientific research. It is also the current record holder for the longest continuously crewed spaceflight mission now since November 2000. NASA's Mars Exploration Rovers (MER) are an ongoing robotic space mission involving two rovers, Spirit and Opportunity, exploring the planet Mars. The missions began in 2004 with the arrival of the two rovers-Spirit and Opportunity-on the Martian surface. It continues to this day with Opportunity still in operation over a decade later. New Horizons completes our image of the known planetary bodies when first we emerged from our celestial crib. Pluto is the most distant target ever seen by mankind and it stunned everyone when it turned out to be much more than a cold cratered iceball. This mission has been staggeringly successful at Saturn having been inserted into orbit in 2004 and still actively doing science 10 years later. This mission was also a two-in-one as it carried and deployed the Huygens Probe in 2005, becoming the first ever surface landing in the outer solar system when it touched down upon the surface of Saturn’s moon Titan. Giant Leaps featuring the historic missions of human spaceflight is the third in our series of space exploration prints. The missions selected include Apollo 11, The International Space Station and Vostok 1. Screen prints are all from a limited edition series. Screen prints are running low! The first human spaceflight in history. Vostok 1 was launched on April 12, 1961 from Baikonur Cosmodrome with Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, making him the first human to cross into outer space.
