Converting Our Spacecraft Pins Into Magnets

Converting Our Spacecraft Pins Into Magnets

Got some cool advice from a customer who turns our Spacecraft Pins into Spacecraft magnets.

Method 1: Remove the pin backing

Cut off the needle with snips and grind down any stub
Glue a thin neodymium disc magnet to the back of the pin
Use a thin metal backing to attach the pin to fabric (this keeps the pin flat)

Method 2: Keep the original backing

Leave the needle and clasp intact
Attach neodymium magnets to the back, positioning them beyond the needle area
For the Voyager pin example: two sets of quarter-inch cube magnets were stacked on the back

Method 3: Reverse setup

Glue thin metal backing to the pin
Use a neodymium disc magnet to hold it in place

For Spacecraft Pins

Since they're already metal, they'll stick directly to refrigerator magnets without any modification needed.

Important Tips

Don't use neodymium magnets for both the pin and backing - they snap together too forcefully and are difficult to separate.

Each pin may require a slightly different approach depending on its size and design.
