Interview with Jay Hillyer
SC: Where ya' from and years on earth?
JH: Connecticut, raised in Brooklyn. 29 rotations around the sun.
SC: What are you up to at The Chop Shop?
JH: I partnered up with the owners of The Chopping Block (Tom Romer and Matthew Richmond) and started Chop Shop. I have a small drafting table that needs attention so right now I'm pumping out tee's, temp tattoo's and posters and brainstorming with the boys about the next big thing.
SC: Favorite artists/inspirations?
JH: Right now it's Charles Burns, Geoff Darrow, Chris Ware, Mike Mignola, Enamel's striping, Tom Romer at the tops. Still trying to wrap my head around Giant Boy and the Robot so that list should stand strong for a while.
I started a digital archive of inspiration stuff setup by categories and it ranges from locations to patterns to people that make me laugh. It's a great place to put those random Google image search finds in...which I have to admit, plays a major role in what I'm making now. As long as funny images are flying around the internet, I'll be making things.
SC: Top 3 video games.
JH: Advance Wars (still playing)
Star Wars: Knights of the old Republic (beat 3 times sadly enough)
Resident Evil 4 (screamed like a girl for the first time in my life playing this so I've got to give it it's due credit). Most Zelda's, Eternal Darkness, Pikmin, Neverwinter Nights series, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, Metroid Prime, Jade Empire, Fire Emblem and Mario Golf for gameboy twistin my arm.
I'm avoiding picking up a 360 cause Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle-earth II and 2K Sports anything will ruin my life.
SC: What materials are you using?
Speedball and Windsor Newton artist series brushes.
SC: Can't miss?
JH: A Met's or Jet's game. Morning coffee and over easy egg with cheese on white bread with salt and pepper, my baby's cooking and Battlestar Galactica. So say we all.
SC: Top 3 movies.
JH: Lord of the Rings Trilogy. Easy.
SC: Favorite vice(s)
JH: Me' pipe and me' ale
SC: Ketchup or Mustard?

SC: Power Animal?

SC: Fried or Grilled?
JH: Fried with good seasoning.
SC: Last Starfighter or Conan the Barbarian?
JH: Conan! He knew what is good in life.
SC: Bobba Fett or Sauron?

SC: Top 5 Musicians/Bands?

SC: Space Station or Deep Sea Facility?
JH: Space cause I'd be that much closer to finally learning how to moonwalk.
SC: Upcoming work/projects up your sleeve?
JH: Got a bunch of exciting things in the works for chopshop that I can't just yet reveal. But a lifelong epic comic is in the works that im stoked about.

Blogging is finally on The Chopping Block.
